Dave Raun's Horizon 1

There may not have been a more helpful builder/flyer that I contacted than Dave Raun.  His airplane actually caused improvements in the design of later Horizons.   The "Dave Raun Pitch Trim Tab" built into the elevator was subsequently added to the details of the plans sold by Mike Fisher.

As time permits this particular builder will be highlighted with additional pictures and comments posted by this author.  With one or two possibilities, there was no one as helpful as Dave Raun to this author's construction of his Horizon 1 project.

Dave Raun's Horizon 1 had accumulated 165 flying hours as of late April 1999.   Powered by a Continental A-65-8 it is swinging a 72 x 44 Flotorp propeller.   His airplane was a kit-build project with many subtle modifications.  His finished weight was 564#.  Dave used steel shock tubes and aluminum covered land gear legs.  He replaced the "shopping cart" tailwheel with a Scott wheel and made a steel tail spring.  Stainless steel piano hinges replaced hinge material provided in the kit from Aerovision.  Dave crafted a 4.75 gallon fuel tank and installed it about the front seat right on the CG.  Gaps around the horizontal stabilizer and elevator were faired in as well as bungee covers resulting in a 3-4 mph increase of cruise speed.

Howard Levy did an article on Dave's plane in the April '98 issue of Kitplanes.   "Cover-it" used his plane in their advertisement in Sport Aviation from 9/98 through 2/99.

Unfortunately, Dave is not on the internet yet but promises that may change soon.  Dave's address is 166 Barcelona Avenue, Westerville, OH  43081.
