Neil Payne's Horizon 1

Submitted 3/27/05:

Greetings!  On March 27, 2005 my Horizon One (kit no. HO46) became a FLYING airplane.  Construction began in September of 1991 with a few "shelvings" to accomodate lifes "bends in the road".  Powered by a Subaru EA81 auto engine conversion (Warp Drive prop), the airplane flew very nicely after lifting off at approximately 55mph (Location - Hamilton Field (1K3), Derby, Kansas).  The flight was about 25 minutes, uneventful except for the jitters of a first flight (this is my first project).  So many folks have helped over the years and  I thank them all - building an airplane is a collective effort.  I've flown the plane several flights (about 30 minutes each) and presently fine tuning engine/prop performance.  I'll be happy to share information or answer questions that might help a fellow aviator.  Let me know if you need/want more information or photos.  Thanks for the website!

Passing along a few photos of my H-1.  I'm in the 12th year (unfortunately, should be close to a record on time) for this project.  Have had numerous shelving periods but actually covering the wings now.  A Subaru is mounted on the firewall with a "Reductions" reduction drive on the overhauled engine (warp drive prop - 3 blade, is in the basement) and the radiator is mounted under the fuse.  Using the polyfiber process to cover and it's going okay.  Be happy to answer any emails/correspondence.   We live near Wichita, Kansas (air capitol of the nation) - lots of airplane resources around here.  Thanks for the website - I've often checked in to see everyones stuff.

 Updated November, 2007:

I’m just updating my email  address(davneil@cox.net) if anyone would like to contact me via the Fishnet Hangar site (etc).  My Horizon One first flew in 2005 but was grounded for 2006 and most of 2007 as I removed the originally installed Subaru auto conversion engine and installed a Continental 0-200 engine.  I’ve been flying again this Fall  and total hours are about 100 now – I’m enjoying the airplane.
